E is for Easter Egg Hunts

My memory for E was a no brainer.    Every  Easter week I get very nostalgic because I really miss the annual Easter Egg hunts that I used to have for my grandkids, 2 of my sisters' grandkids and sometimes a few extra kids.  We would have from 6 to 10 kids and did we have a good time!

Now this wasn't a hide a few eggs and send the kids out to play afternoon.  This was a very organized, planned down to every detail type of afternoon with nothing left to chance.  I had as much fun as the kids did!

First the kids enjoyed pizza, hot dogs or whatever meal I had fixed that year.  Then came a special dessert like a bunny cake, cookies, ice cream or whatever I had made.     Then each of the kids would get a goody bag full of Easter trinkets, toys and candy.   I had as much fun finding this junk as the kids did playing with it!

While the kids were getting their bellies full, someone would carefully hide the eggs in the yard.  Once this was finished and the kids were ready, they flew out the back door with baskets tightly in hand.   Amidst squeals of delight and scurrying feet, all the plastic eggs filled with surprises managed to find their way into a child's basket.  When everyone's basket was full and there were no more eggs to be found all the kids would head into the house where they could pour out their treasures and see just what they had found.

At this point the afternoons varied some years.  Sometimes I would have crafts or games planned that the kids would play to try and win prizes or sometimes they would just go outside and play.  Either way it was a fun time for all.

Now, all of our grandkids are older and think they have outgrown the Easter egg hunts.  I, for one, really miss them.  Holidays are never the same when the kids grow up.

Until next time...that's my view.

  2. Isn't that the truth? I love the babies hanging out anytime, but the holidays with all the little ones are my favorite memories. Now everyone wants to stay home cuz they finally get a day off! *sigh*
Life is just too busy. ♥

    1. You sure got that right Jo. Kids never have time for their old parents anymore. Where's the respect? :D

    1. You really should Jenn. It was so much fun watching the little ones when they would find an egg. You would have thought they had found a hidden treasure!

  4. Give them a few years. They'll have kids of their own and Easter Egg Hunts will be cool again!

  6. We do that with our grands. SO much fun! Well, give it another 15-20 years and maybe you'll be hosting egg hunts for the great-grands. :O)

    1. I know how you feel Maren. One of my grandmothers died when I was only 4 and the other when I was in 7th grade. Even the one that was alive until later never did anything with us kids that I remember.

  8. Easter egg hunts are so much fun! When the grandkids have kids you can reinstate the egg hunt. I am 43 and I am not to old to hunt eggs and your eggs-trava-ganza sounds like a blast!!

    1. I had as much fun as the kids did, Kathy. I guess that is why I miss it so much. Hey, I would totally go to an egg hunt if someone invited me! :D

  9. I'm a betweener - child too old, no grandkids yet, and I miss the Easter egg hunts. The look on a young kid's face when they find an egg, priceless.

I even think nostalgically of the years when hiding the eggs in a way that the child could find them, and the dog could not, was quite a challenge.

    1. Beverly, you are so right. There is nothing more priceless. We had a wide range of ages at ours so it was always a challenge to hide some easy enough for the younger kids and hard enough for the older kids.

  10. Great post! I too love Easter egg hunts but my grandsons live so far away and they're split between 2 homes, coordinating holidays with them is so difficult.. I do however take comfort in the Easter egg hunts I did with my own kids and look forward to those precious days when all schedules coordinate and we can include our grandsons.

I found you via GBE 2. :) - Happy Easter!

    1. Thank you Mimi. I'm glad you found me. Welcome. It's hard when the kids live so far away. Mine aren't as close as I would like and as the grandkids have gotten older and more involved in activities it is harder for them to come home as often. I miss them.

  11. Yep, Kat - holidays change just a bit once the kids grow up. But, I think that little child in them is always there and they still enjoy the festivities. ;)

Happy Easter to you! What beautiful memories you have!

    1. Thank you Linda. My grandkids are 11 and 14 so they aren't completely grown up, although they think they are. But they do think they are too old for Easter egg hunts. Happy Easter to you too.
